{"id":5056,"date":"2020-02-04T16:42:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/?p=5056"},"modified":"2026-01-15T12:49:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T12:49:35","slug":"ivorian-youth-get-ready-for-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/ivorian-youth-get-ready-for-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Ivorian Youth Get Ready for Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Following the official\nlaunch of JA programs in Cote d\u2019Ivoire, JA Cote d\u2019Ivoire delivered its first\nprogram called &#8220;Un weekend pour entreprendre&#8221; translated as \u201cA\nweekend for Entrepreneurship.\u201d With funding from the US Embassy in Cote\nd&#8217;Ivoire and supported by theAndrew Young Center for Entrepreneurship and the Ivory Coast SME agency, the program engaged young\npeople in a weekend-long entrepreneurship boot camp that developed their\nentrepreneurial and financial literacy skills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three-day program took\nplace from 23<sup>rd<\/sup> January to 25<sup>th<\/sup> January, 2020 at the\nAndrew Young Center for Entrepreneurship in Abidjan. Selection\nfor the program was very competitive. Over 658 online applications were\nreceived, of which 96 successful applicants were selected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Verlaine-Un-Weekend-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:367px;height:245px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Un-week-stude-1-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:369px;height:247px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>Students engaged in a session facilitated by JA Gabon Program Manager, Verlaine Assoumou<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trainer for the program, Verlaine Assoumou, who is the Director of Programs at JA Gabon, travelled to Ivory Coast to train participants on how to plan their businesses using Business Model Canvas. He explained to them how the model can be used to visualize all the building blocks of a startup enterprise including its customers, route to market, value proposition and finance. Participants also had the opportunity to demonstrate the lessons they learned by pitching their businesses to potential investors. Forty of the 96 participants will receive further training in a 6 month long business incubator which will build their business acumen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Executive Director of JA\nCote d\u2019Ivoire, Aissata Tounkara, advised the participants to be determined in\ntheir entrepreneurial journey. She said, \u201ceentrepreneurship\nis a noble profession. Not everyone chooses to be an entrepreneur but we arrive\nthere with great self-denial.&nbsp; As an entrepreneur, you must succeed in\nconvincing others of your vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrepreneurship&nbsp;has the ability to improve standards of living and create wealth,\nnot only for the&nbsp;entrepreneurs,\nbut also for their families and communities. In Africa, new data is indicating\nthat young people entering the workforce are most likely to be employed by\ntheir peers.
