{"id":3985,"date":"2019-04-02T11:01:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T11:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/?p=3985"},"modified":"2026-01-15T13:36:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-15T13:36:37","slug":"ja-africa-member-nations-celebrate-global-money-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/ja-africa-member-nations-celebrate-global-money-week\/","title":{"rendered":"Global Money Week: Learning, Earning, Saving"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior Achievement Africa joined the rest of the world in celebrating Global Money Week (GMW) from 25<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to 31<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> March 2019. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GMW, a&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/childfinanceinternational.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child &amp; Youth Finance International (CYFI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;initiative, is an annual financial awareness campaign built to inspire children and young people to learn about money matters, livelihoods and entrepreneurship. Since its inception, GMW has touched the lives of 32 million children and young people in over 165 countries worldwide. The theme for this year\u2019s celebration was \u201cLearn, Earn, Save\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA Africa and its member nations commemorated the week long celebrations with events to educate and create awareness on financial literacy among young Africans. The celebration is in line with JA Africa\u2019s mission to empower Africa\u2019s youth through financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness education. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jagabon.org\">In Gabon<\/a> , JA Alumni, Laurain Essono Ngoua and Cedric Bekale gave back to young JA students by speaking at a conference organized by the Entrepreneurship Club in Coll\u00e8ge Bessieux. The conference was themed &#8220;The initiation of young people into entrepreneurship and digital age.&#8221; During the lively sessions, Laurain and Cedric shared personal experiences and tips from their ventures in business and mentored the students on how to take advantage of the digital age in their business aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/JA-gabon-gmw.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jaghana.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, JA Africa held a twitter chat with Abeiku Greene, Programs Manager for JA Ghana, on the theme \u201cCelebrating Financial Inclusion for Africa\u2019s Youth\u201d. The aim of the twitter chat was to engage stakeholders in a dialogue on the need for financial education for young children and start the conversation on possibly integrating financial education into the school curricula.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Twitter-chat-1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Twitter-chat-2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jamascareignes.org\/\">J<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jamascareignes.org\/\">A<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/jamascareignes.org\/\"> Mauritius<\/a> had a Money Box Challenge to inspire children to save money in a smart way. Many young children participated in the challenge.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Students also participated in a workshop on how to &nbsp;finance a business, which was conducted by representatives of SME Mauritius Ltd. JA More than Money program sessions were also held at the Beau Sejours Government School followed by a money management talk at MCSS Novelle France School.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Mauri-gmw-challenge.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ja-nigeria.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nigeria <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kicked off Global Money Week with a Global Money Week walk organized by Central Bank of Nigeria. On Financial Literacy day, several financial institutions represented by their senior management taught JA&nbsp;financial literacy curriculum to students across Nigeria. In Abuja, Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Aishah Ahmad, taught Students of Government Secondary School about earning, managing and saving money. JA Nigeria, Executive Director, Simi Nwogugu, was on Channels Television Business Morning show to speak about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8KvWz193wy8&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial Literacy in Nigeria.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/J-A-Nigeria.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/J-A-Nigeria-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasa.org.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA South Africa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> celebrated&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Money Week<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;in partnership with Star Savers South Africa, Boys and Girls Club of South Africa and the Ombudsmen for&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banking Association of South A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">frica<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to teach primary school learners about smart money habits.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/South-Africa.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/jaswaziland.org\">In Eswatini<\/a> (formerly Swaziland), GMW kicked off with a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> students\u2019 debate between three high schools on the topic \u201cMy Savings My Future\u201d. Throughout the week long celebration, students attended lectures at Eswatini Central Bank and the Eswatini Stock Exchange to experience the world of work in Finance and Stock Exchange. JA Eswatini also signed a partnership agreement with Eswatini&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Revenue Authority<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;to strengthen financial literacy skills of &nbsp;over 1,300 students across 50 schools.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Swazi.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Swazi-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jatanzania.org\/#on_going_program\">In Tanzania<\/a>, students&nbsp;attended a job shadow at NIC Bank&nbsp;Tanzania&nbsp;as part of GMW. The purpose of job shadow is to give students first-hand experience of the world of work and allow them to develop and practice both technical and soft skills that are critical for certain job roles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Tanzania.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jauganda.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA Uganda&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in&nbsp;partnership with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NIC Holdings Ltd&nbsp;delivered a program to teach students of&nbsp;Seeta High School&nbsp;and&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ndejje Senior Secondary School<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;about career opportunities in banking and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphasized the importance of financial literacy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Uganda.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/JAZambia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA Zambia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Citibank Zambia celebrated financial literacy day by teaching students on knowledge and skills they need to make better financial decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Zambia-1.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Zambia-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jazimbabwe.org.zw\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA Zimbabwe&nbsp;<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">worked in partnership with financial institutions including Barclays Bank, NedBank, First Capital Bank and BancABC during Global Money Week to teach students <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about money, savings and investments.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Zimb.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Zimb-3.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Zimb-2.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JA is proud to be a part of education initiatives like GMW as they are critical platforms to bring attention to the need for developing personal financial management capability of young people. However beyond GMW, there need to be &nbsp;focused and consistent efforts to build the financial literacy skills of African youth if we want to move beyond the low adult financial literacy levels across Africa. This is where JA comes in. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through a variety of in-school financial education programs, JA educates youth, providing them with the knowledge and skills they need to make better financial decisions as adults. JA believes that financial education is especially helpful when provided from a young age, because the opportunity exists to correct knowledge gaps proactively, rather than retroactively.
