{"id":3182,"date":"2018-03-13T09:20:23","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T09:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/?p=3182"},"modified":"2018-03-13T09:20:23","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T09:20:23","slug":"ja-senegal-and-delta-air-lines-launch-innovation-camp-in-dakar-senegal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/ja-senegal-and-delta-air-lines-launch-innovation-camp-in-dakar-senegal\/","title":{"rendered":"JA Senegal and Delta Air Lines Launch #Innovation Camp in Dakar, Senegal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>For Immediate Release<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>13<sup>th<\/sup> March, 2018 \u2013 JA Senegal partnered with Delta Air Lines to run an Innovation Camp, which was held at Place du Souvenir Africain on March 3<sup>rd<\/sup>, 2018 in Dakar, Senegal with 88 university students from six schools.<\/p>\n<p>The students were selected from British Business College, Centre de Formation Professionel et Technique, Senegal Japo<a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_5748.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3184 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_5748-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>n, Ecole Superieur Polytechnique de Dakar, Institute Technique De Commerce (ITECOM) and Institution Sainte Jeanne D\u2019arc to participate in this event. Students went through a design thinking workshop facilitated by Babacar Birane, CEO and Founder of Baobab Entrepreneurship (a Senegalese enterprise specialized in designing and running early stage startup support programs), to understand how design thinking can be used to solve complex challenges in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Students were subsequently divided into ten groups to work on developing solutions to two challenges presented by Delta Air Lines. The challenges included identifying opportunities for Delta Air Lines in the petrol and gas industry, which is an asset for the economy of Senegal, as well as discovering new business prospects for Delta with the recent opening of the new international airport, <em>A\u00e9roport international<\/em>\u00a0Blaise Diagne, AIBD.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_5799.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3186 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/IMG_5799-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/span>After an hour of working together, the students presented their solutions to a panel of judges comprised of Delta staff. Institute Technique De Commerce (ITECOM) emerged winners.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">For the new airport challenge, ITECOM proposed that Delta introduce an initiative to sensitize the public on the distance from the Airport to the city, partner with hotels and transportation companies to shuttle passengers from the airport to the city and build a refinery plant close to the airport to provide kerosene for the planes and avoid flight delays.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">With respect to the opportunities for Delta in the petrol and gas industry, the team proposed that Delta should introduce a new line of services, create a biofuel plant and sell kerosene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;\">Ecole Superieur Polytechnique (ESP) de Dakar placed second. They recommended that Delta build a petrol reserve, introduce special offers for Senegal flights, establish a network for transporting people and luggage and provide digital assistance for the passengers.\u00a0<\/span>Both teams won a trophy and cash prize.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (Ministre de l\u2019enseignment superieur de la recherch\u00e9 et de l\u2019innovation), Mary Teuw Niane, was present and engaged with the students at the Innovation Camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I am very happy to be part of this great initiative between JA Senegal and Delta. This activity of Junior Achievement is in line with the new agenda of our government. I am also encouraged to see that both public, private and training institutions were represented at the event. I invite JA to join the other initiatives of the Ministry, such as the development of the new center of learning, la Cit\u00e9 du Savoir de Diamniadio, which will be completed \u00a0within the next year<\/em>,\u201d said Monsieur Mary Teuw Niane.<\/p>\n<p>The Innovation Camp offers an experiential learning environment for students based on real-life business situations. Executive Director of JA Senegal, Ms. Fatou Samb said, \u201c<em>We are delighted to partner with Delta Air Lines to impact the youth in Senegal. The Innovation Camp comes at a time when innovation is driving the world and this will enable Senegalese youth understand the importance of innovation and how they can apply the design thinking process to solve problems in Senegal.
