The Forum brought together an estimated\u00a01600 delegates;\u00a0among them,\u00a028 ministers of Education and 2 deputy presidents among several governments&#8217; Education officials.\u00a0Dr Fareed Zakaria, Anchor, CNN-GPS, was also present as a plenary speaker.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The theme for the Forum was\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;T<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1743 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Phil-in-Dubai-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/>aking Greater Collective Responsibility for Public Education&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was motivated by the fact that there are millions of children out of school and 500,000,000 in \u201cfailing schools\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breakout sessions were primarily focused on public education,\u00a0the motivation of teachers,\u00a0the role of teachers, governments and\u00a0non-state actors in funding public education among related issues. The challenges in public education and the failure of governments to fulfill Millenium Development Goal\u00a0#2 (achieving universal primary education) were also central in plenary discussions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speakers reiterated the point that Education should be everybody\u2019s business. With regards to technology in education, research shows that it can amplify innovative teaching in Mathematics. However, sadly the\u00a0high use of technology in schools leads to low reading ability by students and\u00a0teachers also don&#8217;t feel that\u00a0they will be rewarded if they are innovative. All\u00a0representatives\u00a0from\u00a0governments, professional associations,\u00a0businesses and families\u00a0were urged to\u00a0be involved in Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another issue that came up was the fact that Innovators are sadly blocked out of the education solution\u00a0as governments are not receptive to change and innovations. JA however, is challenging the status quo\u00a0by offering innovative, appropriate and relevant programs to youth of all ages.\u00a0It was agreed that there is need for Shared vision, Performance management, Frontline capacity and Delivery architecture amongs all parties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there was a lot of emphasis on teacher professionalism and helping governments deliver on the basics, the need for JA&#8217;s work was highlighted.\u00a0The need for Life Skills, work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy is a critical piece and teachers have to be abreast of time with these changing needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JA Zimbabwe Executive Director, Phil\u00a0Mlambo, represented JA Africa at the\u00a0Global Education &amp; Skills Forum, an initiative of the Varkey Foundation\u00a0held from\u00a012 &#8211;\u00a013 March in Dubai.
