{"id":1727,"date":"2016-01-25T09:18:16","date_gmt":"2016-01-25T09:18:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/?p=1727"},"modified":"2016-01-25T09:18:16","modified_gmt":"2016-01-25T09:18:16","slug":"ja-ge-build-student-capabilities-in-engineering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/backend\/ja-ge-build-student-capabilities-in-engineering\/","title":{"rendered":"JA &#038; GE Build Student Capabilities in Engineering!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JA in partnership with General Electric (GE) Africa\u00a0, embarked\u00a0on a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Challenge with a focus on Engineering and its application, on Friday, January 22, 2016.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The community service event brought\u00a0together 120 students from the Unity Cluster of Schools in Accra, to be mentored by senior executives of GE and staff of JA to build capabilities in engineering from idea to design and implementation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-1728 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/30956134553_0340e526a0_o-1024x572.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr Jay Ireland, the CEO &amp; President of GE Africa explained that the purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity for senior executives of GE and staff of the two organizations to interact with and contribute to the growth of young Ghanaians by giving them insight into the possibilities of their future professional lives.\u00a0He noted that a similar campaign was held last year to raise awareness and stimulate interest in STEM careers among junior high school students and also prepare them for the reality of the contemporary workplace. This event gave\u00a0senior management of GE the chance to share their career experiences with the junior high school students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor the young students, it is an\u00a0opportunity to gain exposure to accomplished professionals at the peak of their careers and gain understanding that can help define their pathways to success,\u201d he added.\u00a0Mr Ireland noted that students were\u00a0given the opportunity to share their experiences with water shortage in their communities, some of the adverse effects and solutions they have observed to address the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr William Derban, board member of\u00a0JA Africa &amp; Director of Financial Inclusion &amp; CSR\u00a0at Fidelity Bank\u00a0was also present and\u00a0stated\u00a0the event offers an excellent opportunity to young people in Ghana to work with a\u00a0fully experienced youth entrepreneurship and work readiness focused NGO\u00a0like JA Africa and Corporate Volunteers of GE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Marketing and Communications Officer of JA Africa, Maame Yankah also\u00a0\u00a0noted that engineering is the creative use of science, mathematics and technology to solve real-world problems and improve the lives of people and thus teaching students this concept at an early age is vital to preparing them for STEM careers.\u00a0She said the event was\u00a0an occasion for the students to work in small fun teams as aspiring engineers to build a water tower as a solution to their community problems.\u00a0\u201cEach group was\u00a0assigned a budget and had\u00a0to purchase materials for their project, but could not\u00a0spend more than their budget. They had\u00a0fake money, which they could\u00a0use to purchase the materials to build the tower. This was\u00a0to teach students how to work within a budget and still produce high quality products.\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1729 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.ja-africa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/31765823035_51573ab570_o-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osagie Ogunbor, Communications Manager, GE West Africa\u00a0also remarked that students learned\u00a0about engineering and how it often involves conflicting goals, adding that, engineering ethics helps engineers figure out how to use their moral principles to help balance conflicting goals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEngineering ethics are important for business because it builds trust in the engineer from the community and employers.
