Rwiza, founder and CEO of InvoPay. Instead, it sparked a solution to a $5.8 billion problem stalling small businesses across his country.

At JA Africa, we see this story play out time and again across the continent: when young people face systemic economic barriers, they don’t just adapt; they innovate.

Closing the Gap for Small Businesses

In Tanzania, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) drive local economies, yet thousands are held back by payment terms ranging from 30 to 120 days. According to the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Tanzania’s invoice financing gap stands at roughly 13% of its GDP. Delayed payments don’t just slow down individual businesses; they drag down entire national economies.

InvoPay was created to break this cycle. It operates as a digital platform where MSMEs can sell their pending invoices to accredited financial investors for immediate working capital. Business owners get cash flow when they need it most, enabling them to hire, expand, and thrive.

Nurturing Potential into Pan-African Impact

InvoPay’s journey was accelerated through the JA Social Equity Program (SEP), an initiative we proudly deliver alongside our main partner, the Z Zurich Foundation, and our local implementing partner in Tanzania, E3Empower Africa.

Being selected among the Top 10 Startups in the AfroInnovate Youth Challenge provided InvoPay with seed funding that allowed the team to rapid-prototype their platform and conduct critical market research on the ground.

That early spark ignited rapid growth and regional acclaim across major financial competitions:

Platform Launch & Immediate Traction: The team built a fully functional digital platform tailored for MSME invoice trading. Within just 12 days of launching, the first three invoices were posted and funded.

Absa Bank Recognition: InvoPay gained early recognition and backing from major financial players, earning an award during the Absa Bank competition.

Pan-African Success in Nigeria: Taking their innovation to the continental stage, the InvoPay team traveled to Nigeria and secured 2nd Place (Runner-Up) at Zenith Bank’s prestigious Future 5.0 Summit.

Institutional Partnerships: Building on these wins, InvoPay forged key strategic partnerships with leading commercial banks and financial institutions.

Reaching the National Stage: The PesaTech Accelerator

Continuing this impressive trajectory, InvoPay reached another milestone: securing a top 10 spot in Cohort 3 of the PesaTech Accelerator Program, supported by the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and NMB Bank. Alongside $10,000 in growth funding, InvoPay is now receiving strategic backing and guidance directly from NMB Bank and the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) to navigate regulatory frameworks, a crucial step for scaling any financial technology business.

Cultivating Africa’s Next Generation of Leaders

What started as an eviction notice in a small office has transformed into financial hope for thousands of entrepreneurs who deserve to keep their businesses alive.

At JA Africa, alongside visionary partners like the Z Zurich Foundation and E3Empower Africa, we remain committed to providing young people with the skills, mentorship, and opportunities needed to turn local challenges into scalable economic solutions.

“A special thank you to the JA SEP Program, which played a crucial role in shaping our early journey and setting us on the path toward growth.
