Reports to: Vice President of Finance (VP Finance)
Position
The Controller will be a key member of the finance leadership team, responsible for overseeing the consolidated financial operations of JA Africa. The Controller ensures the integrity of consolidated and standalone financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and supports the organization’s strategic goals by providing relevant and reliable financial information. This position requires a leader adept at managing complex financial systems while upholding the values of transparency and accountability.
Responsibilities
Financial Management and Reporting
• Prepare accurate and timely consolidated and standalone financial reporting in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
• Prepare financial consolidations, including preparation of eliminating entries, ensuring accurate integration of financial data across multiple entities and currencies.
• Develop and maintain financial controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure integrity in financial reporting.
• Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the CEO, VP Finance, budget owners, and other key stakeholders.
• Support the VP Finance in overall financial stewardship of the consolidating/subsidiary-level entities (e.g., Rwanda), including building subsidiary finance teams and performing interim roles during transitions.
• Oversee monthly closings, approve journal entries, account reconciliations, issue payments, and follow up as appropriate.
Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management
• Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, including PAYE and other tax filings, Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) audits, grant reporting, and donor requirements.
• Lead the coordination of external audits and address issues in collaboration with the VP Finance.
• Oversee and ensure the timely submission of reports to funders, working closely with the Finance Manager.
Systems and Process Optimization
•Assist the VP, Finance, in improving financial policies and workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
• Support the VP Finance in assisting country-level finance teams to ensure consistent financial management practices.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
• CA, CPA, CMA, or equivalent certification required.
• Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in accounting, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.7
• Proven track record in nonprofit financial management, including grant accounting and donor reporting.
• Experience with international financial operations, including managing multi-currency and multi-entity consolidations.
• Strong knowledge of IFRS and regulatory frameworks for nonprofits.
• Proficiency in financial management systems (Sage Intacct) and advanced Excel skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, timeliness, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders from various backgrounds.
• Experience leading and managing remote teams.
